Hunt Tests

AKC Hunt Tests provide an opportunity to test the instinct, hunting ability and trainability of out weimaraners. The tests are divided into three different stakes:

Junior Hunter: A dog must exhibit a willingness to hunt out away from the handler, an instinct (nose) to find birds and an ability to point the find in such a way that the hunter can clearly identify this behavior as a point. Additionally, the dog must exhibit trainability in the manner in which he responds to the handler’s commands and body language.

Senior Hunter: A dog must exhibit all the qualities of the junior hunter PLUS a trainability that allows him to hold his point through the flush of the bird. He must also retrieve in a timely fashion a bird that is table worthy. A senior hunter must also honor his brace mate when he approaches brace mate on point. His level of response to the handler must be such that excessive commands are unnecessary.

Master Hunter: This is truly a dog of great value—a dog that is so well trained that he is a true pleasure to hunt behind. This is a test of a completely trained bird dog. To pass this level,, a dog must exhibit all the skills of the senior hunter plus he must accomplish these skills with no verbal commands from the handler.

In order to obtain a JH, a dog must qualify in 4 hunt tests

In order to obtain a SH, a dog must qualify in 4 hunt tests at the senior level PLUS have attained a JH. A dog may obtain a SH by qualifying in 5 hunt tests if he does not have a JH title.

In order to obtain a MH, a dog must qualify in 5 hunt tests at the master level PLUS have attained a SH title.
